My grandmother and I were married on the same date. Since she passed away and could not attend, we had her picture at the altar.

My grandfather was 17 when he joined the Navy as a nurse and was put on a ship during WWII. I was always told that my grandmother waited for him while he was overseas. They were together until he died in '98, and she followed just a few years later. This is my favorite wedding photo of them. I think my grandmother is just gorgeous.

Good idea on getting married before he sailed off. Walking down the aisle when you haven't got your land legs back would be no fun, after all. Thanks for sharing your grandparent's story!

Remember gals, your life isn't about what you like to do or what you are good at. It's about positioning yourself to meet as many men as possible and pretending to be interested in their boring hobbies. #1940slogic

My Pepere and Memere on their wedding in 1953. I love how smitten my Grandfather looks.

Haha, I love the incredulous look on your grandmother's face! They look like a fun pair!

My Mums schoolfriend married her French Canadian in a very Make do and mend WWII ceremony you can tell its a wedding because someone gave Doris a silver paper horseshoe for luck, they emmigrated to Montreal and had a very happy family.

What a great photo! I was unfamiliar with this tradition, but as submitter Diddleymaz pointed out, it was a Canadian custom for wartime brides to carry silver horseshoes made of paper. You can read more about Canadian War Brides at the Canadian Veteran's Affairs website.
