Last Sunday, twenty-one couples from western India were married or engaged in a mass ceremony held to protect the girls from prostitution. Many women in the Saraniya community end up being sold into the sex trade by their families because of tradition and the allure of easy money. However, the activists who organized the wedding believe that marriage or engagement removes the girls from such work. Thus freeing them or preventing their entry into a life of veritable slavery. Couples as young as twelve were engaged, while the older participants tied the knot.
