Yesterday North Carolina voters passed Amendment One, effectively banning same-sex marriage in their state. However, it's still legal for first cousins to get hitched. Because close relatives should be able to marry each other, but two dudes kissing? Ew.
Today Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire signed a bill legalizing gay marriage and making Washington the seventh state (eighth counting the District of Columbia) to legalize gay marriage. Oh yeah and Rick Santorum was visiting at the same time. Awkward...
Proposition 8 was ruled unconstitutional in the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals this morning. The ballot, which limited marriage in California to unions between one man and one woman, was initially passed by voters in 2008. The Supreme Court will likely now rule on gay marriage next year.
Retiring Congressman Barney Frank is engaged to longtime partner Jim Ready. The Democratic Representative became the first Congressperson to publicly come out as gay in 1987. His home state of Massachusetts is also one of six states (along with the District of Columbia) that have legalized gay marriage so far. Frank and Ready have been dating since 2007.
